Mary Melville believed that her grandmother had been married twice before to seamen who had died at sea, and that her maiden name was Lamplough. This is possible via the following chain of marriages and births;
On 3rd Sep 1807 Mary Lamplugh was christened at Great Driffield the daughter of Edward Lund (turner) and his wife Rachel. No death has been found for Edward Lund.
On 6th April 1816 Thomas Carter married Rachel Lund at Great Driffield. No death has been found for Thomas Carter except for Thomas Carter, solicitor bur 28 Dec 1818 Great Driffield.
On 22nd Feb 1820 Rachel Cater [sic] married Ralph Lofthouse at St Mary’s Sculcoates.
At the time of the 1841 Census Ralph Loftus was living in Keyingham and working as a miller. Ralph Loftus (b 1777) died of bronchitis at Sculcoates Workhouse in Hull on 5th July 1849 aged 72. Assuming the age at death is correct, Ralph is proba bly the son of Thomas and Ann Loftus baptised 2nd March 1777 at Coverham. Thomas Lofthouse had married Ann Ryder at Coverham on 12th May 1767.
